The Bolantes – a dance for Resurrection

Following an old pre-christian ceremony but remade to fit with the Catholicism, every year during the Easter or Resurrection Sunday a group of men of the village of Valcarlos (Navarre, Western Pyrenees, Spain) performs traditional and ritual dances at the main square of the town to commemorate the resurrection of Christ. The ‘Bolantes’ of Valcarlos are dressed with colourful suits which reminds to other Pagan traditions related to the Spring celebration, purification and rebirth of nature after hard, snowy and long winters.Ernest Hemingway defined the Western Pyrenees as the last wild place of Europe.
