The Passage of Time
1_ Sister Gertrude Morgan (April 7, 1900 – July 8, 1980) was a preacher, missionary, artist, musician, and poet who worked in New Orleans in the 1960s and 1970s ... I photographed her in the early to mid '70s when I lived in New Orleans.
2_Hattie Williams is a religious visionary whom I met when she was trying to learn to play the harp in order to commemorate the building where she grew up, that was slated for demolition
3_Dorothy Riester, was a sculptor an founder of Stone Quarry Hille Art Park in Cazenovia, NY - she and her husband lived lives of travel and adventure. She is now 96 years old, lives in an assisted living home and continues to make small sculptures in her room.
4_Jessie Landecker was a famer's wife and painter - now a widow in her 90s she continues to make art in her room at an assisted living home and reads about the latest development in art, culture, politics and ideas.
5_Tija Berz was a lively gallery owner in Ljubljana, Slovenia, when I knew her. When we met she gave this crystal which I put in front of my camera lens to take this kaleidoscopic portrait of her. Last I knew about her she was retired and living in the country.

about the photographer
I'm an art and documentary photographer who works on long term personal projects about identity, memory, personal history, displacement and war. I travel frequently to Eastern Europe and Mexico exploring a terrain in earlier stages of my life. My work has been awarded grants, fellowships and prizes from Art Matters, Inc., Aaron Siskind Foundation, Light Work, Arts Link, Bemis Center for Contemporary Art, Virginia Center for the Creative Arts, Austrian Ministry of Culture, New York Foundation for the Arts, the Society for Photographic Education and Px3, among others.
