Hokkaido, the northernmost region of Japan, is home to a vast abundance of nature.
I go there because it is a place where I can find beauty the likes of which does not exist in Tokyo, where I live normally, and discover things which I have never seen before.
Since the average temperature in Hokkaido in the winter is below freezing, many things are covered with ice.
When I saw the patterns that had formed in the ice that covered the rivers and lakes as a result of being shaved away by flowing water, melting and freezing again, I was deeply impressed. The patterns appeared to me to take the shape of various things, such as cells and the faces of strange creatures.
They were incredibly beautiful.
Different things are formed each day, and the same thing is never formed twice. This novel discovery gave me a renewed sense of the awesome beauty and power of nature.
