entry description
Each year, Travellers and Gypsies come to the little town of Appleby-in-Westmorland in the north of England to buy and sell horses, to meet up with their friends and families, to meet potential partners and to celebrate their culture. Appleby Horse Fair is an annual highlight for many of them – and it definitely is a wonderful time for the many children coming together there. It reminded me of Astrid Lindgren’s famous story ‘All about the Bullerby children’ – as just like Bullerby, Appleby, for this one week, is a place where children are free to play outside, to hang out with their friends, stay up late and experience adventures. All the families stay in caravans just outside the town, surrounded by farmland and animals - and each summer this one week seems like a wonderful eternity.about the photographer
