Forests are like clockwork, with all the lifeforms working to make the entire ecosystem function as one entity. From carpeted moss upon rotting logs to mushrooms pushing up through the forest floor, forest ecosystems are home to a beautiful complexity of life that is in plain sight – but often overlooked. This series was created to help others see the beauty of these cryptic lifeforms. Viewers will journey through the forest at an ant's perspective to see towering mosses bathed in sunlight, the anatomy of how mushrooms rise from below, how species live in a mutual harmony in exchange for goods and services, how parasites rule their worlds, and how water is integrated down to a near-micro scale.about the photographer
Matthew Cicanese is a National Geographic Young Explorer and Emerging League Photographer with the International League of Conservation Photographers (iLCP). He holds a Master of Fine Arts in Experimental and Documentary Arts (MFA-EDA) from Duke University, as well as a Bachelor of Science in Environmental Studies from Florida Southern College. Matthew is a diverse documentarian that works in a variety of mediums including digital photography, narrative filmmaking, audio storytelling, and immersive experimental media in effort to inspire people to conserve the planet. His work has been featured internationally through media outlets including New Scientist Magazine, BBC Earth, and the Royal Geographical Society’s Gallery Exhibition.back to gallery
