Changeling
‘Changeling'.
What if you were a Changeling?
What if your memories were different from the stories you were told by your family?
What if you felt you did not belong, like you were writing someone else’s diary? What if you really were that Changeling, taken away by the fairies…
I started collecting old photographs from family albums wherever I would be. While looking for a kind of recognition I noticed that these photographs show the close similarities of how a family archive from f.i. Greece or The United States compares to that of my own, which speaks of a universality of family.
In this project ‘Changeling’ I captured memories by playing with the concept of time, space and scale within an imaginary life. I wanted to get a filmic feel of times gone by.
I used different photographic concepts: I flashed out the faces in the portraits to create a more universal recognition, I made kaleidoscopic collages to capture a child's point of view, I created filmic sceneries trying to experience passing time. I made polaroids to catch the feeling of uniqueness and I added graphic colorblocks to pictures, trying to investigate and capture the colors of the past.
‘Changeling’ will be both a photobook and an exhibition. I’m currently working on the project.
In my photographic projects, photos, installations and photobooks I investigate memories by playing with the concepts of time, place and scale. These memories for me exist in an imaginary world, parallel to the everyday life in which I live. The places where these two worlds meet each other is where I find my images.
