Impressions of India
Varanasi (Benares) is one of the oldest cities in the world and, certainly, the most beguiling I’ve ever been into. Last year I was traveling India on a long academic trip, and decided to spend a few days in Varanasi. The city captivated me to the point that I kept prolonging my stay over and over again, thrilled by the fascination of meandering its alleys every morning in search of its real and vital life. This short collection of 5 snapshots is a sample of frames that tells my story of the city as the silent and undisturbing observer of its absorbing environment.

about the photographer
My name is Marco Campi, I’m a street and documentary photographer based in Milano, Italy. In my everyday life I work in academia where my scientific studies evolve around cognitive sciences in an attempt to tie the concepts of observation, knowledge and uncertainty. In this field, I have pioneered the so-called “scenario approach”, which describes how single data points can be used to unveil general patters and similarities (web-site: http://marco-campi.unibs.it/). My photographic bent developed early on in my life when I commenced exploring the environment with my Canon AE1. My approach to photography signs a continuity with my scientific studies where single frames are snapshots of humanity and a camera becomes a means of exploration to unveil connections and diversity in the societies. In this endeavor, I always strive to portray the spare, and yet emotionally rich, daily gestures and activities of people.back to gallery
