WHEN THE SMOKE RISES
Australia is a landscape unique in its savagery and spectacle. As a boy born in industrial Manchester, UK, this contrast was never more apparent than when I first arrived in Perth many moons ago; that first experience saw me basking in the stunning vistas of the Nambung National Park whilst using a big stick to fend off brown snakes. I was the art director on a commercial photography shoot – keeping one eye on the back of the camera, the other firmly on the red dirt around the tripod.
That juxtaposition, the incredibly beautiful landscape combined with the incredibly scary natural critters, has fascinated me ever since and I strive to capture images that live up to this brutal beauty. It’s unlikely you’ll see any famous Australian landmarks on this site. Unless they’re overrun by brown snakes…
My wife, ex-producer to commercial photographers and Art Buyer at M&C Saatchi, ‘gently’ nudged me into Australian landscape photography and we work on this as a joint venture, combining our complimentary skills - me behind the camera, she playing the role of assistant art director, picture editor, blog editor and sales director.
This website is a work in progress. It will be constantly added to; images will come and go. But while some images may fall by the wayside, others will become keepers. I hope you check back every now and then and see where we have got to…

entry description
Australian trees are unique. The shapes, colours and textures are found nowhere else on the planet. But these incredible natural wonders come into their own when shrouded in bushfire smoke. Their haunting, skeletal appearance, with most of the gum trees white limbed, feel like ghostly sentinels, guarding this brutal landscape…this was none more evident than in the devastating 2019/20 bushfire season.about the photographer
