Emma Hartvig
Emma Hartvig photographer emmahartvig.com Emma Hartvig (b. 1990) works with photography as a space of psychological and narrative tension. Her images are built through staged, closely choreographed encounters in which women collaborate to shape scenes of interiority, rest, and withdrawal. Viewed through a performative lens, these scenes draw on mythic structures while remaining grounded in lived presence, negotiating the tension between public visibility and private interior life.

Born and raised in Sweden, Hartvig moved to London, where she completed a BA in Photography at the University of the Arts in 2014. She has since lived and worked in cities including Paris and Berlin, and is currently based in Vienna. Her work has been exhibited in the United States, where she debuted her first solo show with FAS44 Gallery and later The Hulett Collection in Tulsa, OK - as well as across Europe in cities including Milan, Venice, Vienna, London, and Bratislava. Her work has been published in L’Oeil de la Photographie, Fisheye Magazine, Die Zeit, Vogue Italy, C41, and AnOther Magazine, among others. She was included in Rizzoli’s book Pools (2020) and Hatje Cantz’s The Swimming Pool in Photography (2017) with her acclaimed body of work The Swimmers. Her achievements have been recognized with honors such as the Julia Margaret Cameron Award and the Aesthetica Art Prize.

In addition to her artistic practice, Hartvig has been widely recognized for her commercial work in fashion and luxury. She has created celebrated campaigns and commissions for brands such as Miu Miu, Loewe, Chanel, Lancôme, and Smythson, and has contributed to magazines including Wallpaper*, AnOther, Kinfolk, Marie Claire and L'Officiel Paris.
