title
Dunes: Abstract Expressions
the dunes of Namibia create oceans of simple structures with a complex relationship to
light. Devoid of context, people, plants, animals, these immensely grand mountains of
sand are studies in abstraction. They are a woman’s prone torso, a perfect triangle, an
infinite “S” curve. Constantly evolving, they are consistent only in their physical makeup.
They are unique to their very place and time, as the wind will ensure that the shapes we
see won’t ever repeat themselves. I chose this very extraordinary place because of these
ephemeral qualities, because I was able to create my own meaning while chasing the
light across the land, and because the viewer might see the very same shapes, lines, and
ethereal light and draw from them a different conclusion.
