Grove from Dunes: Landscapes Evolving
This image was taken in an area known as Deadvlei. Meaning "dead marsh", this unique landscape of white clay and dead trees abuts the immense sand dunes of the Sossuvlei desert. This clay pan of earth was originally formed by floods from the Tsauchab river which created temporary shallow pools that allowed trees and vegetation to grow. When the climate changed, however, drought hit the area and the sand dunes encroached on the pan, blocking the river from the area. The trees died, as there was no longer enough water for them to survive. The remaining skeletons of the trees, which are believed to be about 900 years old, are now black because the intense sun has scorched them.

entry description
Both calming and dramatic, the process of photographing the seemingly endless desert sand dunes of Namibia was inspiring and energizing; an experience of communicating with a landscape that is hospitable only to a handful of particularly hardy flora and fauna. This image was taken in an area known as Deadvlei.
