PASUNG
My article focuses on the work of Dr. Luh Ketut Suryani and the efforts of her namesake instutute to eradicate this practice.
Ketut suffers from schizophrenia. His relatives, fearing that he might escape and harm people, condemned him to Pasung*, the Indonesian term for this practice of immobilizing or binding the mentally ill.
Professor Suryani speaks at length with the family.
In the end they decide to remove the Pasung. Finally Ketut is free to walk without the burden of the heavy log.
The Suryani Institute operates a volunteer program which treates patients and seeks to enlighten people regarding mental health issues, providing a process by which to eradicate Pasung through education.
His photography, moments borrowed from the context of Asian street life, teem with a cast of characters that present to the viewer hints, traces of the story contained therein.
He enjoys working with whatever equipment is to hand, spontaneously capturing a subject. Beautifully depicted emotion rendered with masterful composition.
