Detroit: A Closer Look One Year from Bankruptcy

Various social structures (workplaces/schools/churches/theaters/jails/etc.) have been greatly affected over the years by the closure of the auto factories in the 1950s in Detroit. Subsequent population changes and tax cuts have affected the surrounding neighborhoods and two years ago the city declared bankruptcy. At this point there are over 88,000 "abandoned structures" and this number is still growing. Locals offer various perspectives on how investment and advocacy are vital to changing the job market, community organization efforts and city services offered for future generations.back to gallery
