The Butterfly Tears
From the time I was a child, I would hold on to broken things – broken dolls, broken toys, broken hair clips, and I often felt that they were even more beautiful because of their imperfections. I was a daydreamer, a storyteller, and I’ve carried all of these things into adulthood. As a young woman, I use these as tools in my photography, exploring the beauty in dark, ethereal worlds and the broken stories within them. The images are born of the bittersweet, even cruel fairytales that are born within the worlds of my mind – worlds I love and are precious to me.
Sometimes, we all feel like we’re falling off the face of the earth. Sometimes, we want to.

entry description
The Butterfly Tears is about the stigma of society against people with invisible illnesses, whether that's mental illness or some physical disability that isn't visible to the naked eye. These people often have such incredible strength against insurmountable ignorance in addition to the affliction they already live against. They also often fail to recognize that strength of character and beauty within themselves.about the photographer
My name is Jenessa and I’m a fine art photographer from Western Canada. I was born in British Columbia in 1991, and was raised by a family of artists, from painters to writers, to musicians, and actors. The people closest to me have always instilled a deep appreciation for art and their styles have largely influenced my work. I struggled to find my place in the art world, until one day when I decided to pick up a camera. From that point on, I was a goner. From the time I was a child, I would hold on to broken things – broken dolls, broken toys, broken hair clips, and I often felt that they were even more beautiful because of their imperfections.
