"Vanishing, Stump Pass Beach" is part of an ongoing series called "Remnants." After more than a century of urbanization, the natural landscape in many parts of Florida is so minimal and fragmented that it almost seems strange, out of place – like an apparition from a distant, ancient age. "Remnants" documents small, and increasingly rare, moments of native sub-tropical beauty in the remnant green spaces along Florida’s heavily developed Gulf Coast. These highly condensed, intimate views of scenery reflect an aesthetic response to the close proximity of human infrastructure and activity – very often just outside the camera’s frame. The use of long-exposure photography (usually in stormy weather) creates a haunting, dream-like atmosphere that captures the sublime, often transporting, experience of encountering face to face these ghostly fragments of primeval landscape. “Remnants” is a search for beauty and wonder amid Florida’s diminished, and still degrading, natural horizons.back to gallery
