Eusapia
The inhabitants of Eusapia have constructed an identical copy of their city underground for their dead, so that they can find themselves in familiar surroundings. Only a confraternity of hooded brothers is allowed to descend into the necropolis to settle the deceased into their new dwellings. They also tell of changes that the dead regularly make to the underground Eusapia, which are immediately copied by the Eusapia of the living.
This serie depicts unusual aspects of the Eusapia necropolis. The rooms and tunnels are characterised by the rare changes that the dead have made to the underground Eusapia. They would have drawn inspiration from the architecture of faraway lands that they had visited during their lives, surprising and sometimes even bewildering the confraternity of hooded brothers…

entry description
This photographic journey is based on Italo Calvino’s book Invisible Cities (Le città invisibili). The project recounts Marco Polo’s tales of his imaginary journey to Chinese Emperor Kublai Khan, who asks the explorer to go and explore his vast empire. When he returns, Marco Polo visits the Emperor’s palace and describes the atmosphere and structure of each city in both real and fantastical detail. The inhabitants of Eusapia have constructed an identical copy of their city underground for their dead, so that they can find themselves in familiar surroundings.
