Out of focus Portraits
Explosions, flooding, earthquakes, air pollution, temperature records, war, terrorist attacks. Violence of all size and nature is pouring from the screen. I sit in front of the TV and try to comprehend but nothing of what I hear from politicians, anchorpersons, analysts, witnesses, explains the causes of all the nightmare around.
It seems that nothing else happens on Earth except for tragedies and this feeling not only saddens me but increases my lack of understanding why. I’m a grown up, I think of myself as of an educated and knowledgeable person and still I’m that much dependent on the plasma screen to make me aware of what is going on in the world. Everything happens so fast and is put in the news immediately, and is complex with many viewpoints some of which are contradictory. Television is a sort of a funnel where all information from around the globe is being fed and then mixed and blended, and fused to the point beyond comprehension. Television gives me knowledge and at the same time deprives me of knowledge, I feel lost when confronted with so many misfortunes.
The avalanche of disastrous news keeps coming from the TV screen making me more and more confused, and more and more insecure. To the extent that everything I see is out of focus; it becomes a blurred amalgam of alien colors and forms. Well established speakers with controversial opinions create a mess of assessments and conclusions in my mind and their images start resembling the awkward appearances of alleged extraterrestrial life forms as shown in the popular culture.
By this photo series I try to convey my feeling of utter perplexity in understanding my habitual world.
Dimo had gone through various life challenges being forced to drop out of school and start working to support himself and his family. Low-skilled and underpaid jobs like construction worker, welder, driver, turner and miller had been his options to make a living. But his striving for knowledge made him attend an evening high school while working full time during the day. Later Dimo obtained bachelor and master degrees followed by a PhD. Dimo has recently graduated from a one-year photography program at National Academy for Theater and Film Arts in Sofia (NATFA) „Kr. Sarafov“.
These various educational and life experiences have formed his own perspective on the visual interpretation of the world around.
