entry description
In the “Selfie Series,” I drew the focus of my art closer to myself and reflected on individual’s passive role in society. I blended my selfie images with commonplace objects from my daily life, such as keyboard, television, embroidery, etc, aiming to allude to the complicated modern world featuring abundant information, traditional cultures, and social expectations. In my opinion, objective surroundings can gradually be internalized in human mentality, and shape people’s behaviors to an immense degree.about the photographer
Art-making for me is a process of self-definition, an ongoing path, that will continue for years. I grew up in a small village beside a highway in the suburb of Beijing, where I rolled in grass, ate fruits form trees, and played in crop fields. When I was seven, my family moved into the center of Beijing for my education. I enjoyed the benefits of metropolis, but nostalgia for nature frequently came to me. Although my childhood memory gradually slipped away, I still dreamed about the smell of crops and the color of forest. Now I study in the US and often find myself entangled in the mesh and fusion of heterogeneous cultures. While I’m mostly concentrating on sculpture in Yale University, I enjoy painting and photography as well, constantly pushing the divisions between various mediums. My varied experience in diverse environments stimulates me to challenge the binary boundaries between seemingly incompatible realms, such as nature and humanity, or Eastern and Western cultures, and to create more dialectic and integrated artworks.back to gallery
