These images are part of a larger series called "Los Trabajadores," which photo documents the critical importance of the Mexican workers to the construction industry in the Western United States. Often working for piece work wages, they are primarily responsible for the building of most of the homes and commercial buildings in the Western United States. Without them, construction activity would literally stop. As this nation grapples with politically hot-bed issue of illegal aliens, we need to first understand how vital these hard working people are to our economy and way of life in this country. What's more, these images show just how hard they work and hence contribute to their own life and to our society.about the photographer
Marshall Gould’s sharp, high contrast black-and-white photographic images can be characterized by diagonal framing, clean compositions, dramatic highlights and strong, luxurious shadows. Often taking documentary-style shots on location, Gould’s latest subject matter might involve a landscape of the American West, a series of an historic, iconic industrial/architectural landmark, a series of equine images documenting the relationship between a mare and her newborn foal, a series documenting the Mexican workers in the U.S., or a culture/lifestyle image, making these gritty, regional works as conceptually dense as they are compositionally superb. Usually incorporating elements of the earth and/or sky, Gould’s works are about co-existence and reference the stylistic philosophies of early black-and-white “Golden Age” photography. Although most of his work is primarily in monochrome, he does work in color, especially when shooting “Americana” images.
