Mall of Berlin - Love Consumerism
Before world war II the property has been the location of a famous warehous: Wertheim. It hast been said to be the most beautiful warehouse of Germany and the biggest one as well. The architecture has been a spectacular mix of historic styles (architect: Alfred Messel) and had an overwhelming effect when it has been opened 1906. The owners were jewish entrepreneurs. During Nazi time the Wertheim warehouses where attacked and suffered from boycott actions. 1937 the owners where expropriated. 1944 the building has been destroyed during the bombing of Berlin. The ruins where in the eastern, communist part of Berlin and erased during the Fifties. The court proceedings about restitution and compensation with the Wertheim heirs found an end finally in 2007 (!).
My work is questioning the place and the architecture about apparitions of the past that still isn't gone, about the role of stationary warehouses in times of internet shopping and the meaning of consume in our contemporary life.
