entry description
Salt marshes and sandbanks are renowned for their productivity. The accumulation of plant and animal tissue rivals and often exceeds that observed in other highly productive ecosystems, including coral reefs and tropical rain forests. Although the local diversity is comparatively low, the abundance of organisms is often breath taking. These fragile ecosystem can often provide important nursery and breeding grounds for marine creatures and birdlife. Despite the valuable services salt marshes provide coastal populations, they are under siege from human disturbance on a global scale. Since the 1970's perhaps as much as 90% of the marsh has been lost and soon there could be none left. This series of aerial images are taken around different locations of UK coastline to show case the beauty of this special natural habitat. I hope this will help to raise awareness to protect these unique ecosystems.about the photographer
