Jonathan Deuter united states
title
The Herd
Jon comes from a family with many artistic talents. He discovered his artistic talents while taking art in high school and doodling instead of taking notes in his classes. Although he thought about a career as an artist, he put these talents on hold for twenty years as he chased other dreams.
In 1994, Jon joined the Army as an Infantryman and served ten years. Jon served seven and half years in the Army at Fort Wainwright, Alaska and two and half years at Fort Campbell, Kentucky. Jon moved back to South Dakota in 2004, unsure of what to do in the civilian world. Jon looked at the skills the army had given him and felt they were best suited for law enforcement. Jon has served as a Deputy Sheriff for two counties, a South Dakota State Trooper and Police Officer with the City of Faith.
Jon felt there was more out there and left law enforcement after ten years. Taking advantage of his military benefits and went to college. Originally, he signed up to pursue a career in teaching history with art teaching minor. However, after his first art class Jon saw his talent was still there, so he changed his degree to a double major in Graphic Design Communication and Art with a certificate in Photography.
Jon enjoys working in all types of media but has really taken to photography. Jon believes that photography is not just about the family portrait you hang on the wall, but an exploration of one’s imagination and adventures. Jon was in the top 100 college student finalists 2018 Photographer Forum Magazine Competition. His work is already displayed on their website and will, also, be displayed in the 2018 Photographer Forum High School and College Book.
Jon currently lives in Black Hawk, South Dakota.

entry description
Every person has that one animal they have a connection with, whether it’s for spiritual reasons or because they think the animal is just cute and cuddly. My animal was chosen for me at an early age, rummaging through the remains of an ancient buffalo jump site on the family ranch. The animal appeared to me again when I joined the Army and my first unit was the 1st Battalion 17th Infantry Regiment “Buffalo’s”.about the photographer
Jonathan (Jon) Deuter was born in Pierre, South Dakota in 1975. Although he grew up in various towns throughout South Dakota, he spent most of his childhood on both of his grand-parents ranches in Ree Heights, South Dakota. As a kid, if Jon wasn’t on the back of a horse, he was running around outside playing G.I. Joe.Jon comes from a family with many artistic talents.
