A City within a City
Since the beginning of the Industrial Revolution, cities, particularly these metropolis’ urban centers, owe much of their present day identity and development success to its investment in primary and secondary passenger rail systems. These vital transportation networks are typically organized around their main railway stations and give shape to a given central business district. Much of the vitality of cities is defined at these key intersections of transportation and commerce.
Functioning literally as a City within a City, Munich Main Station includes passenger rail, bus, taxi, auto, subway and light-rail modes of transportation; dining and restaurants; hotels and lodging; retail shops; and mail and baggage and courier services, all within its confines.
This image celebrates the predawn story of several hundred arriving and departing trains and the movement of thousands of people; describing this European city’s critical interdependence on passenger rail transportation.
