Smoke on the Water
Pittsburgh, once the great steel producing engine for America’s growth from the industrial revolution thru mid-twenty century, now stands with only two remaining operational mills. The United States Steel Clairton Works has been in continuous operation since 1905. This steel mill, located 20 miles southeast of Pittsburgh along the Monongahela River, is the largest coke manufacturing facility in the United States.
This series of images explore the unique character and infrastructure of this struggling yet resilient historic rivers-edge industrial community.
