Olivia & the House of Cards
Olivia shows the dilemma of futuristic tear-harvesting for population control.
Humans cry three types of tear; basal, reflex and emotional. Yet only emotional tears contain a natural morphine (named after Morpheus, the Greek god of dreams) and empirically, women regulate emotion more than men, so in this future, their tears are stronger.
I wanted to show the conflict of emotional release with pain depression which is embodied by Olivia, the nun, a traditionally female figure of one who lives under vow. Or perhaps, a bonded woman. My intent was to ask the question that if society was controlled by a female bi-product, what new kind of commodity would a woman become?
The image was photographed over several days with Olivia in Vienna, Austria. Her clothes, the cards and the doll packaging were all designed, photographed and collaged by me The image assembly and completion took two years. I used a Canon macro lens and Adobe Photoshop to create this image.
Current works involve a sci-fi-art forecast series “FATES” based on the possible human futures of aspects of current climate change problems.
