entry description
This project was created in 2020 for my Honours at RMIT. It stems from my subjective experiences living with depression and the subsequent detachment from self and reality. By using self-portraiture and distortion as methods, my aim was to anchor myself as a representative of the subjective but also retain enough ambiguity to resonate with others objectively. The series takes on a melancholy feel in its focus on introspection, finding the beauty within sadness and using practice-led research to express, reflect and heal through growth.Self portraits printed on 300gsm photographic paper, frozen with dried flowers

about the photographer
Taygan Bassi is a Melbourne based mixed media artist who recently graduated with Honours at the RMIT School of Art in 2020. Originally trained as a commercial photographer, she uses these techniques in her contemporary mixed media artistic work to explore the concepts of mental health, melancholy and identity. Her work takes influence from Greek Mythology and the Romantic era with a strong focus on subjective emotion in order to create a discourse around our unique lived experiences, focusing on their introspective value and the beauty that can be found in sadness.back to gallery
