Cauliflower Sunrise
I made a "live composite" photograph in my garage during the pandemic. I used a picture I took from a past trip to the desert, back-projected it on a 4x4 scrim, and composed a scene using it as a sky. The second layer is a cauliflower that I stole from the fridge, stuck it on a kebob skewer and lit it with gels to make it look like an explosion. The third layer is a black sheet, shaped to mimic a distant ridge. The fourth layer is myself, gazing at the "explosion". I used gels on the lights to mimic the light from the "blast". The distance between layers was about a foot or so, and the entire image was captured in camera. This image concerns themes of anxiety and the yearning to be outside. This hallucination envisions a head of cauliflower as a nuclear explosion.

about the photographer
I have lived in Los Angeles since 2003, two years ago I began to pursue photography as a profession full time. I specialize in portraiture, but enjoy many disciplines of photography from fine art to product. I "graduate" from UCLA's photography certification this year (2021). I am currently working on a projection series of self portraits utilizing pictures I have taken, projected on a scrim and interacting with that projection as a composition.back to gallery
