entry description
In a few streets in Mandalay’s Kyauk Tin San neighborhood (Myanmar), hundreds of stonecutters, many of them children, sculpt Buddhas in dozens of workshops. Excavated from Sagyin Hills, Burmese marble ranging in color from pure white to blueish grey, is valued for its hardness and texture and Buddhas of all sizes, from minuscule to enormous, are crafted here for local markets and export to neighboring countries. Some artisans work with electric power tools, others sculpt by hand, but virtually all work without masks inhaling the fine particles. Generations of men and boys sculpt, while women and girls wash and polish. Many statues stand incomplete awaiting precise instructions for the desired expressions to be sculpted by the most experienced artists.about the photographer
Belgian photographer Alain Schroeder (b. 1955) has been working in the industry for over four decades.
