Aging Rose
I am fascinated by the sheepish gaze between brothers, the morning sun greeting the dirt-speckled cabbage in my vegetable garden, or the way a single toe of a chicken determinedly wraps around a fence rail. The cautious gaze of a nervous horse, the lonely stance of a teenager, the fragility of a broken egg shell all offer a peek into the interconnectedness of nature and humanity and the sense of the sacred that overarches it all. I notice those seemingly mundane things and honor them for their simple reminder of what it means to be alive in all its glory, beauty and messiness.

entry description
I feel connected to these tiny white roses, having planted them this past spring as the first bit of "fun" landscaping at the house we recently built. I recently went out in the cold and saw this one remaining flower, with its shriveled leaves and "age spots". After showcasing its other seasons of life, it seemed appropriate to record this one, too. I can relate to this aging rose, as I have my own wrinkles and blemishes. I appreciate its beauty and resilience, and I honor what it shares with us, as we all confront the reality of time. In this image I combined several techniques, using focus stacking plus an overlay of a blurred photo of the same flower to get a more seamless background.about the photographer
My photographs acknowledge the extraordinary in the simple, ordinary moments of life. Living on 20 hilltop acres in Mount Jackson, Va, with my husband Jeff, two teenage sons, 3 cairn terriers, 2 rescue cats, and 13 hens, I am surrounded by simple, yet wondrous, moments that provide glimpses into the greater connections that flow through all of creation.I am fascinated by the sheepish gaze between brothers, the morning sun greeting the dirt-speckled cabbage in my vegetable garden, or the way a single toe of a chicken determinedly wraps around a fence rail.
