These pictures are part of a larger series I’m currently working on, of constructed still life images referencing historical Dutch and Spanish memento mori and vanitas paintings.
Decay was historically depicted in nature morte as a reminder that existence is transient, death is inevitable, and material greed futile. Our ‘plastics’ or faux object obsession is an antidote to displaying weakness or degeneration and the idea of transience has been flipped on its head by the creation of objects which literally cannot decay. I have used double exposure to give a sense of time and increase the relationship between the symbols used.
