Grizzly Country

This grizzly was photographed in the Canadian Rockies, with Emir Mountain forming a backdrop lit by the setting sun. Since the grizzly is so close in the foreground, a word of explanation is perhaps needed. I am, to be sure, careful to observe the required distance between myself and wildlife in national parks. In this case, the grizzly was wandering alongside the highway, and I parked 100 meters ahead of it. The grizzly advanced past my parked car as it continued to forage, showing no sign whatsoever of aggression. I was therefore able to photograph it from a safe and nonintrusive viewpoint of comparative proximity. Such photo ops are rare, and I used a graduated ND filter to tone down the bright background and bring out more of the details of the bear itself.about the photographer
