Endangered but taking it in stride
Hawaiian monk seals were designated as an endangered species in 1976. There are about 1400 of the animals throughout the entire 1500-mile Hawaiian archipelago, with about half of those residing within the main island group. The Hawaiian monk seal is one of only two mammals endemic to the islands, the other being a species of bat.
