title
Alexis Sunder
The result was this series of images, which are in fact real. We constructed a large and heavy metal structure on which an acrylic mirror (3x2 metres) was mounted. Acrylic was chosen because it’s a material that is both safe and creates amazing abstract shapes and forms when bent or dented. The location of the shoot was carefully chosen to perfectly align the sun in a way that illuminated both the artist and the mirror, thereby creating a backlight for the portrait. The placement was also calculated for the moon rise to be captured, creating interesting results with it being masked as a sunset, playing with Sunder’s music themes.
This could not be made possible without the help of an enthusiastic and creative crew, that didn’t mind getting their feet wet, literally.
Nature conservation has been a particular focus of Silvio’s personal projects. Such projects include ‘Red Soil’, ‘This is your Cyprus’, ‘The Balkan Lynx’ and ‘Within mountains, there lies’, all of which refer to the preservation of natural elements, landscapes and wildlife as well as recounting the experiences of those working hard for this purpose.
Silvio’s personal projects have received international distinctions; his longest-running project, ‘This is your Cyprus’, has been selected as a winning project in the PDN Perspectives Contest in 2017. At the same time, Silvio’s commissioned and commercial work share the common theme of communicating the importance of exploring and appreciating aspects of our surroundings. Such work includes projects and campaigns for Cypriot and international organisations like Cobalt Air, Bank of Cyprus Cultural Foundation, Cyprus Tourism Organisation, University of Cyprus, Antiquities Department, KEAN Soft Drinks and Unicars. His campaign for the later was awarded a Silver Award by the PX3 Paris Photography Prize (2018) and a Bronze Award by the Tokyo International Foto Awards (2017).
Silvio holds an MA in Photojournalism and Documentary Photography from the University of the Arts London (2016-2018) and a BA in Design from Frederick University (2006-2010).

entry description
These images were created as artwork for the release of Alexis Sunder’s debut solo EP, under the same name. Sunder is a singer-songwriter whose music often plays between sunny melodies and darker themes. To capture all the dynamics that his music blends, I wanted to experiment with light and darkness and how this plays out on a mirror set within a natural environment. The result was this series of images, which are in fact real. We constructed a large and heavy metal structure on which an acrylic mirror (3x2 metres) was mounted. Acrylic was chosen because it’s a material that is both safe and creates amazing abstract shapes and forms when bent or dented. The placement was also calculated for the moon rise to be captured, creating interesting results with it being masked as a sunset, playing with Sunder’s music themes.
