IN THE NAME OF THE FATHER
“In the name of the Father” is a photographic series about this particular tradition and heritage in Ecuador: to pass down the first name from father to son, from generation to generation. Family portraits shot between 2013 and 2020 at the four corners of this South-American country. (Complete series : 52 families)
These families, all different from each other with regard to their place of origin, social condition, or life story, are linked by a thread which is invisible, fundamental, and foundational – that reveals a shared connection to the world and a common desire for eternity.
All photographs present these families in one and the same place: their living room. This is a paradoxical place. In a way it represents the public space within a private space. It is where we receive guests; it is also where we carefully, and in a well considered order, display what we want to show to the world. It is the place where we reveal and show ourselves.
Notwithstanding, within this rigid frame of the setting, the families were at liberty (which is at the same time an obligation) to decide together how they would position themselves in relation to each other and what they would wear. In this way they would become the true protagonists of the photograph, the directors who decide how they will show themselves, and ultimately what they will reveal.
I have chosen to present them in black and white, with the aim of minimizing visual distractions and reinforcing the repetitive effect. Black and White coloring helps reinforce the feeling that behind the many differences, we are always looking at the same picture, the same family.
Studies in cultural management at Paris Dauphine France and photography at the Image Center of Quito, Ecuador.
Director of the « Alliance Française » of Portoviejo in Ecuador (2016/2018) after the 2016 earthquake, where he has presented the exhibition "I remember". Florent Tribalat-Moreel, in his photographic series "In the name of the father" he questions the relationships of domination and the transmission of male power, as well as the absence of women.
Currently in preparation "The masculine prevails over the feminine", a photographic series questioning our excluding language through the absurd.
His working methodology is inspired by the philosophy of the German artist Kurt Schwitters, whose idea of symbolic reunion enabled by collage in art is central.
Florent Tribalat-Moreel is also currently working on a photographic documentary project around artificial intelligence in the field of medical research against cancer.
Now, Florent Tribalat is living in Marseille, France.
