North Context
This is about a white plane and things happened on that plane.
This is about a point, line and plane on 'white'.
In winter Hokkaido, even the sky turns white, is a vertical canvas. On this canvas, there are objects and buildings like points, lines, and planes.
However, even details are disappeared, everything remains in photograph.
One image was made by some photographs taken in various viewpoints so that the misaligned parts will gradually become white, while the colour and the texture will come alive gradually in the superimposed part, like Monet or Turner did. And as Hiroshi Sugimoto proved, the points, lines, and planes that are not sharply expressed will more strongly reveal their existence on the white plane.
From my architectural background, I realised that this series was based on the analysis of place.
As a result, this is about the way objects exist in the northern land, Hokkaido. I call this ‘North context’.
For the texture of white, Hanji (Korean mulberry paper) was selected as a material that gives off a deep and profound white like Lee Ufan's canvas.
To express what I saw, this series was printed in the largest possible size. (paper size 152 x 214 cm / image size 140 x 186 cm)
