Waiting for Spring

entry description
War is mud mixed with blood. It’s the friends you make and then lose. It’s the brief moments of terror followed by hours of mind-numbing waiting. For me, war is waiting. Soldiers waiting to see loved ones, mothers for their sons, and pets for their dead owners who will not come home again. It’s waiting for the spring counteroffensive, for western ammunition, but above all, waiting for it to end. I was eighteen years old when I first came to the frontline in Ukraine, somewhat clueless about what war is and how to describe it. Now, I am twenty-two and find myself as much in search of answers as I was when I came here for the first time. These five images are part of many attempts to articulate the terror Russia brought to Ukraine, all taken around the month of February between 2022 and 2024 when the first flowers were about to bloom again.about the photographer
My name is Jakub Laichter, but my friends call me Kuba. I am a 22-year-old documentary photographer, writer, and occasional circus nomad from the Czech Republic. Over the past four years, I have divided my time between completing my literature degree and working a variety of jobs around the frontline in Ukraine.back to gallery
