Milky Way over the Tasman River in New Zealand

entry description
It was my dream trip that I highly desired and planned for so long. New Zealand is a country with such a wonderful landscapes and night sky in the southern hemisphere. Since the impact of light pollution is minimal due to low population density especially on the South Island you turn out to be under purely dark sky. Moreover, the landscapes change practically every half an hour of drive thus making the country so diverse. I planned two weeks driving throughout the South Island exploring different locations for astrophotography. As New Zealand is located much lower in the south you start noticing that all prominent southern constellations and objects such as Crux and Magellanic Clouds rise even higher in the sky compared to what you can see for example in Africa or Australia. Slightly different positions of the Milky Way emerge that you hardly see elsewhere. All this sounded to me so exciting that I was expecting to capture this in my images. The area around Mount Cook is a perfect spot for night photography since it’s considered as a pure star light reserve. I decided to spend the night at this scenic location. I climbed to the top of the rock with a nice view towards Tasman lake with its beautiful floating ice all the way down to the Tasman River Valley. In the end of June the evening Milky Way Arch looked even more round. The red airglow was so intense forming nice pattern under the arch making the night unforgettable.about the photographer
My name is Egor and I'm a landscape astrophotographer living in Bavaria, Germany. Being a professional architect and having an experience with a daylight photography I got into the night photography six years ago and this amazing activity fascinates me up until now. Since that moment I had a chance to travel to the areas of the world where the impact of light pollution is minimised and you can see the billions of stars during the clear night. And this magic moment I'd like to share with you.back to gallery
