Their physical appearance, clothing and lifestyle are very different from their Muslim neighbours. Unlike Muslim women, they wear very ornate and colourful clothes sewn by themselves, have equal rights with men and are highly respected in society.
Kalash women wear headdresses embroidered with seashells and wear them every day, they do not cover their heads like Muslim women, and they wash and braid their hair by the water, regardless of whether they are old or young.
In summer and winter they wash their hair by the water, as they believe that washing their hair at home is inauspicious.
Alcohol is forbidden in Islam, and despite their Muslim neighbours in the region, Kalash women and Kalash men drink their homemade wine and vodka together.

The Kalash people, who have a unique culture, belief and lifestyle, live in the Kalash Valley of Pakistan, neighbouring Afghanistan. Although they do not believe in the three major religions and are not Muslims, they have managed to not to assimilate and maintain their traditions in this difficult geography.Their physical appearance, clothing and lifestyle are very different from their Muslim neighbours.
