wasted light, industrial section series
Wasted light does feature power stations, but having grown up with these on my child hood landscape, seeing them from my mother’s window on the horizon a clear day. It only seemed fitting that they appear within the series. The series comes in two parts, the industrial scenes, which feature heavily in the rural North of England, and skyscapes shot over Lincoln and Chesterfield. The skyscapes themselves capture the orange ether cast into the sky from our towns and cities, preventing us from seeing the stars. Although this is an environmental concern, and ideally I would like to see the true night time sky, the series was not political, but set out to allow the analog technology to preserve this time itself. Trends are changing, analog has become digital, street lights are being replaced with more environmentally aware and considered LED lights.
Wight light was shot between 2006-2009 in Lincolnshire and Derbyshire,UK. All images have been shot in the dead of night over the winter and spring months.
For this submission I have only entered images from the industrial section of the wasted light series

entry description
Wasted light grew out of a child fascination with light pollution. Growing up in rural Lincolnshire, one could see the glow from towns and industrial settings upon the horizon. I had moved back to Lincolnshire as mature student, after living in urban settings for ten years. I was studying photography, and I wanted to capture my child hood memories of light pollution onto film. I knew that this would be possible, but the series only developed after many months of trial and error of how to shoot the landscape at night.Wasted light does feature power stations, but having grown up with these on my child hood landscape, seeing them from my mother’s window on the horizon a clear day.
