Statistics published by the UK Independent Police Complaints Commission in 2012 and 2013 show that almost half of those who died during or following police custody had been identified as suffering from mental health problems.
Places of Safety is an attempt to highlight concerns about the inappropriate use of police cells as a 'Place of Safety' for people experiencing mental distress.
The images shown are the result of many conversations with affected individuals about the meaning and importance of safety, as well as their personal memories and fantasies of safe places. The project hopes to stimulate reflection upon the basic need for safety experienced by all human beings regardless of perceived differences, especially at a time in which conflict, fear and alienation can be seen to negatively impact upon the mental health of increasing numbers of people.
