The Lost Highway
Having moved homes, lived overseas, lost most of my family, changed careers and travelled over the last 20 years, these works are not landscapes. They are portraits. Self-portraits.
Coming or going, you are never really ‘here’, but in a surreal space and time of ‘nowhere’. In-between. temporary, transitory…lost. Ephemeral, lonely, longing for home, or ‘arrival’. It is the opposite of what we strive for, as humans, permanency, security, immortality, meaning, mattering.
At the same time, these spaces can also be pause for thought, contemplation. Alone, sometimes lonely, sometimes peaceful. Reflective. Quiet. Solace. Informed also by film, music and emotion as ‘transitional’ fiction tools, the reflective surfaces & spaces make me question ‘what is reality?’ in that surreal space between departure and arrival. The lost highway.
While her stencil art studio paintings are mostly fictional characters such as super heroine self-portraits and elemental goddesses, her photographic work reflects an interest in humanity and the lives of real people, social, political and community consciousness, happiness, emotion and beauty.
Her street and public artworks can be seen in suburbs around Adelaide. Her studio painted works are in private collections around Australia. She has exhibited her work through numerous group, solo and art prize exhibitions both locally and interstate.
Her photography has been awarded honourable mentions and nominations in international photography prizes and is published both through an online journal and Photoforum's 'Best Photography 2017' hard cover book.
Belinda is currently based in Adelaide, South Australia.
