title
A macro approach to insects
Insects outnumber the diversity of all other animals combined. If all vertebrates vanished from the planet, the disruption to life would be much less than the catastrophe that would follow if insects disappeared. With no insects, ecosystems would colapse.
The reduced sizes of insects combined with the evolution of their wings and the small reproduction intervals boosted their diversification due to the increased number of niches they could explore and respond to. Co-evolving plants set the table for them.
The five biggest groups of insects are represented in this photo series: Coleoptera (beetles), Diptera (flies and mosquitoes), Hymenoptera (wasps, bees and ants), lepdoptera (butterflies and butterflies) and Hemiptera (bedbugs).
The images presented here were achieved by focus stacking from many macro shots of animals ranging from 1cm to 8cm.
All the photos were taken at the Museum of Zoology of the University of São Paulo, USP.
