title
Detroit's Wisest Generation
As a chosen participant of the Documentary Detroit Fellowship Program for 2018, I've explored a wide spectrum of independent living seniors in this ongoing project.
Portraits include an urban legends of Motown and gospel music, entreprenures, spiritual leaders, and social and political activists. Many have achieved successful careers, raised families and made their mark in the city.
“My subjects come from a wide spectrum of lifestyles and sub-cultures, mostly within urban city centers. I’m drawn to learning and understanding more about my subjects, their lives, challenges, and points of view by way of thoughtful dialog and my camera lens”.
“I strive to connect with my subjects in a way that will help both me and my viewers understand and appreciate their worlds in a more meaningful manner, by exploring how they live, how they work, and how they play. What I have uncovered from many of my shoots is my continuous interest in people and the realization that, no matter how different my subjects may look and act on the outside, there are many ways we all can find reasons to connect on the inside”.
In 2018, Janice was awarded a fellowship through Documenting Detroit and has explored the idea of what aging means to many accomplished elders in the Detroit community. Her background in sales and marketing has allowed her to enhance both strategy and story behind each of her works.
Milhem has exhibited her photographs both regionally and internationally and has been awarded several honors for her imagery.
