Tribes of Mongolia
This project is about taking portraits of tribes that are disappearing. The young ones are more and more sent to study in cities and like their new life. Also the life of a nomad isn’t easy at all. We had the opportunity to stay with the reindeer tribe in the north and the Eagle Hunters in the west. That gives us a better understanding of their daily life and who they are. During winter time the weather can be very difficult going down to -45 degrees Celsius. Luckily we’ve been visiting the reindeer tribe in mid-April and they were planning on going further north as it started to get warmer. High temperatures isn’t ideal for herding the reindeers. They need to eat sufficient amount of lichen and those are found in cold areas.
Then we met the Kazakh of Mongolia: the eagle hunters. The closest city to their village is Ulgii. Their particularities as the name of the tribe suggests is that they use female eagles to hunt animals like fox, rabbit and snow leopard. The latter requires 2 eagles said one of the host. They free the eagles when they are 8-10 years old. The eagles lives for about 20 years. When they reach their middle age they are released to procreate.

entry description
I was dreaming of going to Mongolia, the country of blue sky (although it was cloudy sometimes) to visit and learn about the different tribes but also take their portraits. We drove for about 3500km by car from Ulaanbaatar during 12 days. To get to the tribes the road were quite difficult. Most part of the journey was off-roads(bumpy, muddy and rocky). It required patience to see the reindeer and eagle hunter tribes. But we did it and we loved it!This project is about taking portraits of tribes that are disappearing.
