The 24/7 extraction of coal from a remote mine in northwest China uses the last steam locomotives in existence for daily revenue service, a practice nearly 70 years past such employment by the rest of the world.This series of hand-held pan images capture the unique night-time spectacle as coal embers lift into the night sky, water boils and steam power pulls another load of coal up and out of the mine.

Todd is a self-taught, amateur photographer with interest in making images that explore urban and natural landscapes that railroads inhabit and the intersections in between, particularly those junctures where the two have met and altered one another offering image opportunities.back to gallery
