ST. ELMO'S FIRE
"Everything is in flames, the sky with lightning, the water with luminous particles, and even the very masts are pointed with a blue flame."
Charles Darwin, 1832
Lightning shoots across the sky, nature magically transforms through the depths of time, invisible to the naked eye. Electrical discharges out of the darkness, freeze, and bloom are played by chance and control. Each time images are drawn, none is like the other.
Always fascinating to capture nature and make it visible in its dynamics, unpredictability and uniqueness. As if the universe was held for a moment. The force of nature in the form of energy discharges into light for the fraction of a second and this moment of the present is drawn on a photosensitive surface. Electric sparks spit out blue arcs, beating the photo paper surface and drawing the finest lines.
The observer dives in, feels as part of these primeval forces in front of the large-format shots. It is as if the primal forces of St. Elmo's were fires in the middle of the room. The connection to the natural landscape with its phenomena is within reach.
The viewer literally feels the discharge of energy and merges with nature, the universe is looking at it self. The enormous electrical energy is generated with a Tesla coil, it releases a charge of 400,000 volts. The blue gradients with metallic effect on the brilliant Cibachrome lead to an unusual sharpness. This large photograph shows in detail the remarkable effects of depicting light photons, leaving a mystic drawing of the universe.
These images bring us back to the present, reminding us of our physical transience and the eternity of space. During those working process "Bolts of Blue" turns the air into the "Zone of Ozone“.
Switzerland, Italy, France and the US.
His Chrome Camera Art is uniquely he works with a 2.5 x 2.5 x 5,5 m sized walk in camera.
Heino Heimann's color images are made with one of the most antiquarian of
photographic processes: the Camera-Obscura. Literally translated from Latin as “dark
room” Heino has created a room-sized camera in which the photographic paper is
exposed. Light falling on the subject is directly focused onto the photographic paper without an interposing
film negative. His ingenious „Chrome Camera“ combines the ancient photogram process with the
Camera-Obscura and uses Cibachrome photo papers, whose velvety depth, color
brilliance, and light sensitivity are unprecedented, to create rich, original images.
The overall sense of these larger-than-life images redefines the photographic illusion.
Heino's subjects, composed simply and directly, are described with the thinnest
plane of focus, re-creating and exaggerating the way that the human eye perceives
Every images is developed by the artist in his own laboratory, a unique copy and
mostly large-sized format. Heino Heimann’s work consists of portraits and still life, but his newest edition
develops a more abstract position. In the moment he works with a Tesla Generator to expose electrial
discharges direct to Cibachrome, unique pictures in a size of 127 x 127 cm
Heino's earlier work has been represented in galleries or is part of a collection like:
Photokina 2012 in Cologne, Bank Julius Bär in Geneva, Art Collection F.Hoffmann-La
Roche in Basel, Elton John Photography Collection London etc.
