Amino Acid Landscapes

entry description
Each image is a polarized light microscopy panorama of crystalized amino acids L glutamine and beta alanine. I grew the crystals at home and photographed the resulting structures using an old Olympus microscope and a Canon 5dmkiii. The colors are the result of polarized light interacting with the birefringent properties of the crystals; they are not digital manipulations. I have no formal science education but am endlessly fascinated by the unique microscopic landscapes produced by these chemicals which play important roles in our bodies.about the photographer
