entry description
I am attracted to making work that communicates a deeper connection to nature and understanding of one’s self. I actively seek out tension in images that capture motion in an inherently static medium. After years of studying dance and expressing myself through the exploration of rhythm and movement of the human form, I have brought this curiosity and discipline to capturing images of human physicality interacting with the erratic movement of the sea. My training in classical ballet and my career in contemporary dance has shaped how I see movement, line, form and composition. As a former dancer, I innately gravitate to showing emotion through movement and attempt to communicate these qualities in a record of light on paper. As a photographer, the continuous changing light and conditions of the sea and its random rhythms provide me with seemingly limitless artistic inspiration.about the photographer
Rachel Weber holds a B.A. in International Relations from Brown University. She danced professionally with the Los Angeles Chamber Ballet, among others. As a photographer, she is intrigued by the active tension in images that capture motion in the inherently static medium of still photography. While focusing on subjects in nature and the ocean, she attempts to slow down and dissect time as it passes through the camera lens. Rachel uses the intentional movement of her hands while holding the camera to help capture the sensation of the passage of time and the inherent natural state of impermanence. Rachel Weber resides in Santa Monica, California, USA.back to gallery
