entry description
“What I Learned in School” is a photo series that showcases the sense of community at a primary school in Naivasha, Kenya. Schools are usually interpreted as educational institutions where we are taught subjects such as mathematics and science. However, schools are much more than that. They are places where we build friendships, develop intra- and inter-personal skills, and where we find our identity in the community. For me, this photo series is about depicting that sense of community. The Kenyan students that I had the opportunity to interact with taught me the importance of serving one’s community, and the importance of each individual’s part in making one’s community and country grow and develop for the better. I witnessed the great pride these students took in their school, including cleaning it when they arrived on the premises every morning. Their learning was not limited to only inside the classroom, but their behaviour and actions outside the classroom is a testament to their holistic learning. Every student supported and complemented each other, and that is something that I genuinely admired within that community.about the photographer
