When Karla worked in Brazil, where she was often asked to wear straight weaves or blond wigs for her castings. Now she’s moved to Amsterdam: a new chapter in her life. She’s decided that the only way she can feel more herself is to let her natural hair grow and own it. She now simply shows up to every casting call with her afro, and proud.

Many black women growing up have been told, in order to be attractive and presentable, they need to tame their hair. Kinky, coily, dark hair is deemed undesirable and less than. Only straight blond hair captures the public imagination. The model Karla hailed from Brazil, a country that gave the world Gisele Bündchen and Alessandra Ambrosio.
